Steve and his wife Lynda moved to Topeka in 1975 after he graduated from Pittsburg State.  He started attending St. David’s in the fall of 1976. Fr. Jim Bethel was the rector at that time and that’s when Steve started talking to Christus Rex. He was involved with Marriage Encounter hosting weekends and information nights. Steve and Lynda’s children were both baptized and confirmed at St. David’s. They sold a business the middle of 1986 and moved to California, but  moved back in in 1989 when Fr. Bob Layne was the new rector. He asked them to start a coffee hour after church and Steve said yes. So that was the beginning of his kitchen work.

Steve’s stance against the hate of the Phelps clan was one of parish’s most defining times. It had a large impact on their children’s life. Somewhere in the middle of his 2nd year of Education for Ministry he had this idea about a parish meal, and talked a young Spencer Duncan into fixing breakfast between the church services. They still do this, years later. The “Breakfast Crew” over all these years has provided Steve with dozens examples of time and service to St. David’s.

Steve was on the vestry when St. David’s took advantage of an opportunity to buy the two houses that are now our parking lot. It was not an entirely popular decision.  However, one of those houses became the church office after the 2006 fire.  He has had the privilege of visiting the parish in stewardship talks the last few years and Steve believes St. David’s is a special place.
