COVID-19 Precautions

Dear St. Davidians,

Bishop Cathleen convened the clergy of the diocese in an online meeting to discuss our churches’ response to the spread of the Covid-19 virus.  She asked each parish to gather its leaders, lay and clergy, to discern what is best in our particular situations.  I met with our vestry, deacons and education leaders on Thursday afternoon.  We decided that the best way for us to do our part in slowing the spread of the virus is to cancel all on-site gatherings at St David’s through March 29. Bishop Cathleen has approved this plan. There is lots of information in this email, please read it carefully.

  1. All worship services are canceled through Sunday March 29.  We will be offering worship by conference call instead.  We will offer Evening Prayer on Wednesdays at 7pm; Evening Prayer and homily on Saturdays at 5pm and Morning Prayer and homily at 8am on Sundays.  If you wish to participate in this conference call worship, simply dial 425-436-6373 and enter the code 862553.  You will then be on the call.  We also encourage you to watch the services streamed from the Washington National Cathedral at 10:15 am on Sundays.  You can go click on this link to watch the service: www.cathedral.org .  Simply scroll down and click on the purple box that lists the service.  This Sunday’s preacher is Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.  If you want to participate in our morning and evening prayer services and do not have a prayerbook at home, please stop by the church on Saturday, March 14 between 9:30 and 11 to borrow one.
  2. Meetings and other gatherings: By Monday I will have a Zoom account set up for St David’s.  Group leaders- if you would like to continue to meet using this online platform, contact me and I will help you with it.  There is no cost to participants.
  3. Pastoral Care: Clergy will be making personal visits only in cases of emergency.  We still want to stay in touch with you and pray with you and we will do that through phone, email and text.  We will be checking in with folks but if you want to talk with any of us please don’t hesitate to reach out.  Mother Vicki: 919-452-0543, rector [at] stdavidschurch [dot] com ; Deacon Annie: 785-230-5313, annieh2 [at] cox [dot] net; Deacon Mary: 785-845-1186, marybecker [at] stdavidschurch [dot] com.
  4. At this time, we plan to continue limited office hours.  There will be someone in the office Monday-Thursday from 10-12.  If you can accomplish what you need to by phone or email that is best, but if you need to come in, one of us will be there.  Office: 785-272-5144; office [at] stdavidschurch [dot] com
  5. Security system changes:  Because the church building is basically closed, the alarm system will now arm at 7pm each day and you will not be able to enter the building, even with a keycard.  If you have an emergency need to get into the building after 7pm, please text Junior Warden Bryan Irvine at 785-410-2736.
  6. If at all possible, please maintain your regular financial support of St David’s.  Our expenses will not go away during this time.  If you have a Paypal account, you can use the Paypal button on our website.  You can also set up a regular payment through your bank, or you can put a check in the mail (3916 SW 17th St, Topeka, 66604).
  7. Most importantly, check on each other.  Right now we need to maintain our faith community of support and care more than ever.  If you know of someone who will not receive this email, please reach out to them and keep them informed.  We all have a part to play in maintaining our community in this challenging time.
  8. We will reevaluate all this after March 29. I am sure you will be receiving lots more communication from us in the coming days.

The spread of Covid-19 is challenging for us as a world and as a faith community.  Having to cancel so much is certainly a loss, but it is also a gesture of grace and love.  As we work to slow the spread of the virus we are caring for each other, protecting each other, and loving each other.  This is an opportunity for us to live into Christ’s command to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Blessings to you.  Stay healthy, stay safe, wash your hands, and pray.
